The ringed seal (Phoca hispida) spring diet in northwestern Spitsbergen, Svalbard

Abstract

A total of 284 ringed seals (Phoca hispida) were sampled to determine their diet in the spring of 1981 and 1982. Fcw seals contained identifiable stomach contents. No significant age- or sex-related differences in choice of prey wcre found. It seems that in spring northwestern Spitsbergen ringed seals prey upon arctic cod (Boreogadus saidn), decapods and larger amphipods. Diet, ringed seal, Soalbard.
